Sam was almost 16 years old, that’s a pretty good age for a Jack Russell Terrier. The other night he collapsed, he couldn’t eat or stand. I was called out to the home to ease his passing. We sat on the floor next to him, just petting him and talking to him softly, telling him what a good boy he was and how much we loved him. Stella, his companion of seven years stayed by his side quietly. She laid down next to him, sniffed all around his little body and rested her chin on the floor. She seemed to be saying goodbye to her best friend and partner in crime.
As we sat there, Miss Marji told me stories of how the two of them would get into trouble . She said they would often wander away together down the street. It seemed it would only happen if they were together. Sam would only do it, if Stella led the way. She was the instigator. The neighbors would inevitably call to say “Sam and Stella are here!”. Miss Marji would walk down the block to retrieve them and all would be fine, until the next time they decided to take a little stroll.
Miss Marji buried Sam in his favorite spot in the backyard. She left me a note afterwards to tell me how wonderfully peaceful it was as she laid Sam to rest, with Stella by her side.

Sammie was my parent’s dog. They got him the same time I got my JRT Emma, who is nearing 15 and who loved Sammie with all her heart. He was a sweet guy and a great cuddler. This photo brings tears to my eyes. Marjie told me how wonderful you were with him, how gentle and kind. I am sad I wasn’t there, so thank you for posting this. I am glad you, Marjie and sweet Stella were there to help him cross over. We will miss him greatly and he will always be in our hearts.
Thank you again. xo Amy
That was my grandparents dog. I loved Sam so much and I can’t believe he is gone. I will miss him so much and the next time I come down to Hilton Head, I will put flowers on his grave. I love you Sam.
